The “free” credit reports cost about $40. I just got them.
When you go to the supposedly “free” credit report site, it blared that you can get your credit report free, and that you have three different credit reports.
They DON’T say you get all three for free.
If you actually order your reports, it asks for your credit card for “security” purposes.
THEN they tell you you can get only one report for free. It’s around $25 for all three.
So if you go ahead and order, a $25 charge appears on your credit card. You get your credit reports online, and you can download them and print them right away.
Then about a week later another unexplained $15 charge appears on your credit card.
I just got my credit card statement. I have yet to contact them to inquire about the second undisclosed charge.
Whatever. I was checking my credit becuase I got SCAMMED into believing I had identity theft.
DO NOT FALL FOR THIS NEXT SCAM:
I got a letter saying I was overdue paying a loan from some “paycheck advance” company. They say I borrowed money, and it was deposited in my bank account.
I noticed that they did NOT print even the last 4 digits of my Social Security number on the notice. I called and said I never borrowed money. The lady immediately asked for my SSN so she could “check my account.” I told her no way I’m giving away my SSN, I said they don’t even know it.
She told me the money was already deposited in my account. I asked what account number. She gave me the last four digits of the account number. It’s not my account. Later I even double checked with the bank. They say there is no such account under my name.
She said if I want my collection notice cancelled, I should file an identity theft report with the local police, then fax the police report to them.
I did, and the police told me there’s no way any lender would loan money to me with out my SSN. The police said there would be a record on my credit report if the lender checked my credit, and there’s no way any lender would loan money without checking my credit.
I faxed in the police report, making sure my SSN was not on it – I didn’t even give it to the police.
Then I got the $40 “free” credit report. There is no notation anywhere that this company ever checked my credit.
IT WAS JUST A SCAM TO SCARE ME INTO GIVING AWAY MY SSN FOR FREE.
OR IF I WAS REALLY STUPID, I WOULD PAY THE MONEY AND ALSO GIVE MY SSN.
Go to http://www.annualcreditreport.com and begin filling out the questions. There are three different companies you can use. You can use them all at once if you want or you can use each one over time. But you only get one report per company per year.
